WIAW: Sugar Rush

by Jemma on August 15, 2012

in WIAW

Hey all!  I hope you are all having a fab week!  The sun has decided to make a reappearance over the last couple of days so it has been very warm and humid.

So far this week I have been laying off the refined sugar a little bit after the weekends sugar rush, which left me feeling a bit blah!  I have been hitting the smoothies big time and eating a lot more stripped back meals and I feel like my normal self has been restored.

Peas and Crayons

For this weeks WIAW I’m going to walk you through yesterdays activities and food, which started off with a 1/4 of a litre of water which I guzzled down after waking up.  I woke up so thirsty yesterday which I think has to do with the humidity. I’m definitely getting way more than my 2 litres of water a day at the moment that’s for sure.

After getting ready I headed to the gym and did an extended version of strength workout A with 20 minutes of HIITS on the cross trainer and the bike.

When I got home I made a mega smoothie for breakfast made using a banana, nectarine, kiwi, unsweetened almond milk, iceberg lettuce and ice.  I was surprised how sweet this was without adding any sweetener, it tasted amazing!

I had to head out to our Parish church to see about getting our BANNs read so took the opportunity to make the most of the sun with my OOTD:

vest top: H&M, embellished orange kaftan: Zara, 3/4 length trousers: H&M, wedges: Sole.

I’m so glad that we have finally got the reading for our BANNs sorted.  It’s another official wedding box ticked.  Everything seems to be moving so fast at the moment that my wedding day will here in a flash.

When I got home I made myself a little snack of sultanas and salted peanuts for a sweet and salty hit.

For lunch I made a salad which contained everything but the kitchen sink.  It included romaine lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, 1/2 an avocado, beetroot, kidney beans and mozzarella. I didn’t bother with a salad dressing as there was so much going on in this salad on its own and let the flavour from the each ingredient stand out by themselves.

After getting some work done in the afternoon I took a break in the sunshine and made myself an ice cold raw cacao, peanut butter and raspberry smoothie with ice and almond milk. Delish!

I fancied noodles for dinner and had some green tea noodles in the cupboard that I ordered from Goodness Direct.  On Monday I picked up some bargain reduced veggies from Sainsbury’s including a huge bag of broccoli and mushrooms for 49p each!

IMG_3647[1]

They needed using up so I made a broccoli and mushroom stir fry in a ginger, chilli and sesame sauce.  This was so simple but was really tasty!  The noodles soaked up all of the sauce too, yum!

Later on I made a bowl of chopped fruit including half a banana, cherries, strawberries and a nectarine and added some full fat Greek yoghurt dusted with cinnamon and goji berries.

I also had a mug of my current favourite tea…

Licorice and mint, yum!

I think that was a pretty good day of eats with no refined sugar, just the natural sugar from the dried and fresh fruit.  It’s amazing how eating differently can make you feel as I great compared to Sunday night after my sugary weekend.  I never regret indulging like that anymore though as I know that a couple of days eating more simply soon puts me back on the straight and narrow.

Ooooh!  Did y9u notice that there were no apples mentioned in this post, go figure? Is the world about to end!?  Open-mouthed smile

What do you do to get your body back in check after too many indulgences?

What is the best thing that you have eaten today?

    No apples?? What?? Ha ha!
I agree having a few days going back to basics makes you feel much better.
I had a wholefoods salad for dinner complete with fresh grilled pineapple which was amazing :)

I love that tea, so yummy. Eating simpler food and cutting back on sugar always makes me feel better. x

Sadly I tend to have to have as few restrictions as possible, even after I’ve eaten too much crap when it comes to food. I know the philosophy of balancing out is very popular; it’s just that the minute I try to eat ‘cleaner’ foods only, it seems to make me want to compulsively eat junk even more. Great that it works for you though, and your dessert looks especially nice. Very colourful!

Mmmm… your stir fry looks awesome. It was either a stir fry or curried veg last night for dinner. I now regret not choosing stir fry.

I definitely feel better after a few days of smoothies and huge salads :P I’ve been away for 2 weeks and was feeling a little sluggish so I have gone back to basics for the last 5 days or so focusing on lots of fresh fruit and veggies and I already feel back to my usual self! I’ve only had oatmeal so far today so I will have to say that :P I love getting bargains, I popped into tescos last night after we had been to the cinema and got loads, I got 2 heads of broccoli for 16 cents ridic! As well as equally cheap cauliflower, cabbage, lemons and herbs, so good! I’m a big fan of that tea too, in fact any tea with licorice I am loving right now, I love the pukka licorice and peppermint too so delicious!

Mmm, everything looks fantastic, Jemma…especially that noodle bowl! Love the nectarine speckles in your smoothie! So pretty!

The best thing for me after a few too many indulgences is to just pick up where I left off…sometimes it takes a while for me to feel “normal” again, but like you, I just watch the sugars and in a couple of days I feel good as new!

Best thing I ate yesterday (since the day’s just getting started)…my Thai inspired breakfast pizza! And I’ll probably have the SAME thing today! So yummy!

Just like I said a couple of weeks ago I just get back to basics and give myself some tlc with lots of clean foods and I also definitely give the sugar a miss!

  • Tessa@AmazingAsset

First, that orange shirt is so pretty, love the outfit :) I actually go overboard on sugary stuff a lot (ahemm gummy candy I am looking at you!) so when I do that, I really do feel much better when I have more nutritious/lower sugar stuff the next day- salads, sandwiches, oatmeal.. things like that
Your food looks delicious, especially dinner!

  • Christina Wilmowski

Your dinner looks fantastic! I love noodles & broccoli, yum! Congrats on ticking off your wedding checklist!

  • Emily

    Happy WIAW!
Okay…you’re adorable. And I’m in love with that orange shirt- it’s so summery and fun!
All of your meals look amazing. I’ve been on a huge smoothie kick lately and have been having one (sometimes two!) almost every day. The combination of raspberry, pb, and raw cacao is brilliant. I’m definitely going to try to recreate a similar version.
After a weekend of indulgences, it always feels nice to fill up on healthy foods again. Our bodies appreciate the balance!

Are those pink chop sticks with your dinner?! So cool!

Indulgin is fun, but i always look f0rward to getting back on track after a cheat day – something I never thought I’d say!

You cannot beat great fruit and veg bargains at the supermarket, looks like you got some fab bargains too!

  • http://www.celeryandcupcakes.com/ Jemma Andrew

    Both are amazing, difficult choice!

  • http://www.celeryandcupcakes.com/ Jemma Andrew

I don’t think I could ever just eat “clean” foods only. It’s all just a balancing act for me with a bit of this and a bit of that, but after a bit of a sugar high I feel that cutting back on the sugar for a few days helps me out a lot.
