My Grocery Shop

in EATS!

Today I thought I would do a different type of post focusing on our weekly shopping trip.  A few of you have requested to see what my weekly shop includes so I thought I would blog about it.  We headed to Tesco on Saturday afternoon to get a few supplies for the week.

Our weekly shops mainly include:

  • Fruit and vegetables
  • Whole grains
  • Bread items
  • Protein
  • Dairy
  • Treats
  • Households essentials

Obviously the amount we spend varies from week to week, depending on what we have left over from the previous weeks grocery shop.  We tend to to a massive shop at the beginning of the month to stock up the cupboards with our staples and then top up our store cupboard ingredients with fresh produce.  We never seem to spend more than £50 a week.

SO here’s a look at what we bought on Saturday for the week ahead:

Spring greens, mixed salad leaves, beetroot, strawberries, figs, apples, broccoli, red onion, courgettes, tomatoes, baby potatoes, blueberries, chestnut mushrooms, mixed peppers.

All of this fruit and veg should last us until the close to the end of the week, but I usually have to top up on salad and leafy greens later on in the week.  Alfie loves his carbs, so we picked up some potatoes for him as a change from rice.

IMG_4043

Cinnamon and wholemeal bagels, sliced wholemeal loaf, almond croissants and jam doughnuts.

Alfie loves taking sandwiches to work to get him through those long hours.  We are currently loving bagels at the moment as they were on offer in Tesco’s so we decided to treat ourselves, the wholemeal for me and the cinnamon ones for Alf.  We usually store them in the freezer and take them out when we fancy one.

Alfie also sneaked the jam doughnuts and the almond croissants into the trolley, they’re his favourites!

Free range eggs, butter, corned beef, sausage rolls, mature cheddar cheese. These are all for Alfie’s lunches, but I will happily enjoy the eggs as well.

IMG_4047

Jumbo king prawns, chicken portions, full fat Greek yoghurt, Thai Sweet Chilli crisps.

Obviously the chicken is for Alfie, but we will both indulge in the prawns.  And, I cannot seem to go without my Greek yoghurt at the moment.  We got the crisps for Alfie to snack on during out Saturday night movie.

Other than the fruit and veg and a few other bits, I guess this weeks shop isn’t really a good representation of what I would buy for myself on a daily basis.  It’s more of an Alfie shop…ha! =) But like I said before the amount we spend changes from week to week as does what we buy.  I already have tons of grains and beans at home as well as tofu and I’m more than stocked up on unsweetened almond milk.

May be next time I will blog about a grocery shop that includes more of “my foods.”

How does your weekly grocery shop vary from week to week? Do you try and stick to a budget when you shop?

What treats do you like to add to your shopping trolley?

Actually it’s very interesting to see how your shop balances out when there’s a partner with very different eating habits factored into the equation. It’ll be intriguing to see the difference when it’s more of a ‘Jemma’ shop :)

I used to adore those bagels when I could eat gluten (well, I’m not sure I ever could, but until I was 20 I never figured out that it was gluten causing a problem!) – they’re so soft and doughy…I still remember how wonderful the texture was.

Such an interesting post! I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who runs out of leafy stuff before the end of the week!

I live closest to an Aldi so my regular weekly shop is quite limited and I then top up with things I can’t get there from a massive Sainsburys once a month, and an Indian shop (coriander! a crate of chick peas! all the pulses you could dream of!) once a month too.

I am currently going through a cashew phase – so Aldi’s 75p bags of those + dark chocolate are going into the trolley quite regularly, and I do sneak some biscuits in there as I do like a biscuit with a cup of tea of an afternoon sometimes.

I tend to shop in lots of different places because I like different products from lots of supermarkets-I am quite lucky in that I have most of them fairly nearby (Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, M&S, ASDA etc…!) I try never to spend more than £40 per week (that’s just for myself). Sometimes it comes to a lot less and only very occasionally does it come to more (if it was a M&S or Waitrose week!).
My favourite treat during the summer was frozen yoghurt but that might change as the weather seems to be turning noticeably colder to me now.

Haha I have the same thing for Ben, he has his food which I don’t tend to touch – hello tinned corned beef :-s and then food for me that he won’t eat then our shared food. But I quite like that! I love posts where people show their food shop, I’m so nosy hehe.

Looks like you’ve got a really good mix of things for your and Alfie. It must be quite hard to buy for two different sets of tastes but I imagine I would have to do the same if I moved in with someone in the future! x

My weekly shop is usually fruit and veg and a few things for the fridge, like yoghurt, milk, etc. My cupboard is usually well stocked up with beans and stuff, but obviously I need to top these up occasionally.
When I’m with Peter at the weekend what I buy is totally different, but I try to sneak some veggies in there because he wouldn’t have any otherwise!

I haven’t seen figs in the grocerie store for months so I’m craving them badly!
By the way , your blog looks so damn amazing! Love it :)

We always get fruit and veg as it needs to be bought fresh, and usually some bread as Andy had sandwiches most days, wholemeal wraps, tinned tomatoes and beans. We have lots of things like pasta, dried lentils, dried quinoa, and I bulk buy things like almond and soya milk. My treats are things like coconut water, dark chocolate and posh tea!

I’m always buying fruit and veg throughout the week and yoghurt, that never lasts long. As I live with two girls who eat very differently from me our shop looks so weird – we have everything from giant bars of chocolate and full cream milk to unsalted and unbuttored popcorn and almond milk.

My weekly shop is 90 percent fruit and veg, I just stock up on grains/dried beans/nuts seeds when I need them then. I usually have to do a top up fruit/veg shop or two before the end of the week though!

  • Tamzin

I just go with the flow, never do an actual weekly shop, I just buy what I need when I need it or run out but it’s mostly veg and protein at the mo : )

I take that approach sometimes, great for when you are trying to budget.

That is exactly the same as me if I wasn’t shopping for Alfie as well.

Hahaha! Fruit and veg never lasts long in my house either!

    Thank you lovely!

I always make sure my fridge is well stocked with veggies too, I don’t think Alfie would buy them either,.

It can be quite difficult but you learn how to deal with it :)

Your shopping adventures sound exactly like mine!

I think it is wise to shop around if you have the time to make the most of the offers

    A crate of chickpeas…heaven!

  • http://www.celeryandcupcakes.com/ Jemma Andrew

Sorry you can’t eat the bagels any more, can you get a gluten free brand?!

  • Laura @ Happy Sugar Habits

I do the same weekly shop and like you there is normally a large portion of blueberries in there as quite a fan! lol…I try to stick to 30-35 a week and tend to treat myself with a new flavour of dark chocolate or something a bit different that I haven’t tried before. Total yoghurt is a standard staple tho as I see also in yours!!
