{Review} Chobani fat free Greek yoghurts

A few weeks ago I was contacted by Chobanito see if I would like to review some of their yoghurts which are new to the UK. After reading the rave reviews on these yoghurts on so many American blogs I was super excited to get the opportunity to try these:

I was sent 0% fat free yoghurt with blood orange, black cherry, peach, pomegranate, raspberry and plain.

As a rule I am always dubious about anything that is fat free as in the past I have often found that they are pumped with artificial sweeteners, additives and flavourings. However Chobani yoghurts of artificial sweeteners and preservatives and uses naturally sourced ingredients.

Since this particular style of Greek yoghurt is strained, which helps it produce a thick creamy texture however for me for Greek yoghurt the consistency of these yoghurts isn’t thick enough.

Layer of fruit pieces

Now I am always honest with everything in my blog including my reviews and this one is going to be no different. They generally taste great although a tad too sweet for my liking. The super sweet taste may have something to do with the very high sugar content, especially in the flavoured varieties. In one serving there is up to 21g of sugar, which really surprised me.

Due to the high sugar content I only had these yoghurts in the afternoon at work when I needed an extra push to get me through the rest of the afternoon. I wasn’t exactly bouncing off the walls after all of that sugar, but it did help on some days. However, the plain variety does contain less sugar and I did enjoy it for breakfast with some fresh fruit and granola.

Would I buy these yoghurts? Because I prefer not to have so much sugar in my diet I personally don’t think I would be looking to buy the layered fruit pots. The only yoghurt from the range that I may consider buying is the plain yoghurt as an alternative to my usual Total Greek yoghurt.

Have you tried Chobani yoghurts before? What did you think of them?

Do you prefer full fat or fat free yoghurts?

Completely agree with you here! I think all of us UK people are just not impressed with Chobani and love our good old Fage! They’re just too watery, and overly sweet and with them being fat free too I don’t find them even fulfilling.

I try to avoid flavoured yoghurts because they are either full of sugar or sweeteners. I quite like them as a treat occasionally though. I generally eat full-fat, although sometimes I have low fat or fat free. I like yeo valley or Longley farm because even their fat-free versions are still lovely and creamy.

I really can’t stand yogurt with bits in so I wouldn’t go for these on that account I think. I much prefer adding in fresh fruit to plain/Greek yogurt. It’s a shame about the sugar content, that is quite high! But I guess it beats a chocolate bar if you really fancy something sweet and don’t want to be too naughty.

Wow, you’re the first person I know who doesn’t love Chobani! The 7g of sugar in the plain are natural sugars from the milk, you didn’t find that one too sweet did you? I appreciate the honest review and think it’s awesome that you’re sharing your thoughts, even when they go against the grain. There’s no point in anything other than a 100% honest review! But I love Chobani :)

That’s an obscene amount of sugar for a small yoghurt! I tend to avoid anything fat free like the plague, it’s usually full of sugar/artificial sweeteners etc

That is a lot of sugar! I am posting this weekend on the sugar in yoghurts as have been doing some research. That is definitely one of the higher ones. The natural sounds like it would be ok tho. Good honest review!

I like that you were honest here. They do have a lot of sugar in them! I don’t like tart things however, like lemon or regular Greek yoghurt, so I like the flavoured Chobani. I like the taste, because other yoghurts in Australia are WAY too sweet. I guess that’s why I ignore the sugar in them. I try to stick to the lower sugar ones.

I loooove Chobani!!!! I always just get the plain 0% haha. I tried the plain 2% and couldn’t tell a difference!

Im not a fan of Chobani because of the hight sugar content and occasionally will purchase the plain flavour. I completely agree with your review and love Fage greek yogurt :)

I’m totally with you on this one and I applaud you being honest. To me, Fage is HANDS DOWN the best authentic Greek yogurt and the unflavored variety is delicious on its own and low in sugar. I was never really down with the Chobani hype but many people in the US are!

I adore FAGE so these had a lot to live up to.

Same here, it’s such a shame. I guess they make a nice treat.

  • http://www.celeryandcupcakes.com/ Jemma Andrew

    I enjoyed the plain one!

  • http://www.celeryandcupcakes.com/ Jemma Andrew

Yes some of the flavoured ones do vary in sugar content which is good.

  • http://www.celeryandcupcakes.com/ Jemma Andrew

Glad you liked the review. The natural one was very nice.

  • http://www.celeryandcupcakes.com/ Jemma Andrew

    I totally agree!

  • http://www.celeryandcupcakes.com/ Jemma Andrew

Yes they are a lot more healthier than a chocolate bar despite the sugar content.

  • http://www.celeryandcupcakes.com/ Jemma Andrew

I think it’s had to get the consistency right on low fat youghurts, but the ones you mentioned have definitely cracked it!

  • http://www.celeryandcupcakes.com/ Jemma Andrew

I think we have been spoiled with having Fage here first.

Thanks for the write up, Jemma. We’re glad you enjoyed the flavours of our fruit-on-the-bottom Chobani Greek Yoghurt. The sugars in our yoghurts are all natural – most come from the milk (lactose) and fruit (fructose) with a tiny bit of cane sugar to help sweeten our fruit.
