{WIAW} I can do this!

by Jemma on February 6, 2013

in EATS!

Hello lovelies, I hope your week is going well. My week has mainly been spent revisiting an old friend going by the name thesis. Yup! I’m back in that studying groove again hopefully for the last time EVER!

IMG_5036

My PhD exam is coming up soon and I need to know my thesis inside out and back to front. Considering I hadn’t picked it up since September last year when I handed it in I was quite concerned about whether I would remember anything. After reading the first few chapters I feel quite comfortable with it so far and remember more than I thought I would. This has definitely boosted my confidence a little about the exam and that I won’t enter my examiner’s office in a blubbering mess. Considering how I felt last year about little old me in the midst of a plethora of super intelligent neuroscientist I feel reassured that I will be able to defend my work to the best of my abilities.

I can do this!

This week I’m going to share with you everything that happened on Monday. It was pretty much a mixed bag for me as both me and Alfie were off work so we got to spend some time together. It also meant that we got to recover after having the house full of people at the weekend. It was the day that I started my thesis revision. It was also the day that I received some very upsetting news about an old school friend who I haven’t seen for years.

IMG_5100[1]

I started the day the right way with some hot water and lemon. I have been determined to have this every morning to help my digestion and balance my pH levels. I can already feel the benefits and I haven’t missed a day so far yet.

For breakfast I made a Blueberry and Strawberry smoothie in a bowl topped with Urban Fruit dried strawberries and drippy peanut butter.

IMG_5121[1]

The smoothie contained frozen blueberries, ice, almond milk, water, strawberry hemp protein powder, spinach, honey and guar gum. It was super cold but very delicious.

IMG_5119[1]

I warmed up with a chai latte made with unsweetened almond milk with some coconut oil. I’ve been reading about adding coconut oil to hot drinks a lot in the blogosphere and thought I would give it a go. The latte had a lovely creamy texture, yum!

I ate breakfast over the last installment of Lord of the Rings before I started studying. There is nothing better than a lazy morning. It sounds so wrong, but feels so right!! =)

Lunch was a quick salad consisting of mixed leaves, courgettes, roasted squash and plantain:

IMG_5122[1]

During my afternoon study break I enjoyed some apple spiced tea with half a chocolate chip muffin and a chopped apple.

IMG_5140[1]

That muffin was definitely a great afternoon treat for some added energy for a couple of hours more studying. I love giving myself treats like that when I’m studying it gives me something to look forward too after lots of hard work.

Dinner was lovely spaghetti Bolognese using lamb mince and my own homemade tomato sauce with the added benefits of diced carrots and celery and topped with grated cheese. I also got an extra veggie fix from my courgette noodles moonlighting as pasta.

IMG_5141[1]

Later in the evening I had a bowl of frozen cherries, almonds, Greek yoghurt topped with maple syrup and cinnamon.

IMG_5143[1]

OMG! This was like heaven in a bowl, loved this! This was swiftly followed by a comforting night time chai latte before bed time.

Overall  it was a pretty tasty day of food.  I really enjoyed every single meal, got to love good food days! =)

Have you ever doubted your own abilities? How did you overcome this?

How did you feel when you achieved success when you previously doubted yourself?

Ooh good luck good luck good luck!!! It’s been a few years since I did mine but you sound like you’re in just the right mind set – confidence is absolutely the way to go. My thesis was a rushed submission (departmental funding issues) and in quite a poor state, but becuase I was calm and confident in talking it all through I got through with minor corrections rather than major ones.

I was recommended this book for prep which I found very helpful and lend to all my PhD friends :)

    Best of luck again xxx

@Nazneen Thankyou so much for the encouragement. Fingers crossed it will go well. I think being calm and confident is the way to go :)

So exciting and nerve wracking that you’re near your viva, James is doing a Phd too so I have a little insight into it. I’m sure you’ll do brilliantly though, not long to go now! I bought some frozen cherries yesterday after seeing them on your blog and all I can say is thank you – they are delicious. I couldn’t stop eating them straight from the freezer yesterday, like sorbert! I doubted I’d be able to run my half marathon and worried so much about it. After it had finished I was in such a state of shock, it didn’t really sink in. Then came the relief and joy :)

I never realised that completing a thesis and the VIVA could be so far apart – I’m barely going to have a month between submission/VIVA by the looks of it! Glad you have a better memory than I do because I’m apt to forget everything 10 seconds after I’ve written it.

Eh, I always doubt myself and I think I always will. I don’t think personally I’ll get over it – it’s hardwired into my brain.

What a veggie party! Great that you eat that healthy while preparing for your PhD exam. For me it is always the hardest to prepare healthy meals when I am busy studying. Sweet and salty snacks are just to easy to grab and eat, so thumbs up!

  • http://grownupplus.com Rebecca

When I went in to defend my dissertation I was terrified. Actually, at several points during the process I was terrified. But when it came to the final defense a friend (who had graduated a couple of terms before) told me something that really helped; they (the examiners) may know the literature, but NO ONE knows your work as well as you do. You are the expert; that’s the entire point of the process. So make sure you know the literature again, go over what you did, and then walk in with your head held high. You are the expert on your research. The defense is a process of showing that you are their equal; that means being respectful, but not intimidated. If you’ve written the document and your advisor feels it’s ready for defense, then the work is good enough. You’ve done the hard part; coming up with a research question and answering it. Now it’s about explaining it and the choices you made in the process, one professional to another.
