We’ve all been there, scrambling and racing around the house trying to get things organised for our holidays. I’m lucky enough to have travelled to various places, including long- and short-haul flights, but one always seems as stressful as the next. Hopefully this post will help relieve some of that stress for us all.
It’s that time of year again – it’s the summer! Finally! Many of us will be jetting off to places near and far, and if you’re lucky enough to be one of them, you may actually very well have mixed feelings about it. That shouldn’t be the case though! Going away is supposed to be the time where we relax most, but we all know, sadly it can feel just impossible to do that! What with finding the perfect pair of sandals, packing the right amount of clothes (without getting slapped with a huge excess charge…), and the other six-million-and-one things you need to sort out, you can actually find yourself even more worked up than at any other time of year. The good news? It doesn’t have to be that way. There are a few things you can do to ensure things run smoothly…
When it comes to your finances, you’re going to want to start saving a while in advance. Credit cards and overdrafts are fine, but you’ll really, really want to make sure that you can pay them back. Don’t even think about Payday Loans – those things are evil incarnated! And don’t forget, if you get stuck these days, family and friends can help you in just a click away – sites like Azimo are really great for that. But if you plan ahead, you can order some great rates on currency and you won’t have to worry at all. A general tip is to take a mixture of cash and cards, but as your bank might levy big charges on you, you can grab a Cash Passport instead, which is a bit like a pre-paid credit card in Euros or Dollars!
Once you’ve sorted that side of things, you can start thinking about actually getting underway! The actual travel itself is another biggie. The last thing you want on the day you’re leaving is a mad panic that THERE JUST AREN’T ANY TAXIS OH MY GOD, so why not pre-book your airport transfers? Calling any taxi company in advance works just fine, but if there’s a few of you (girls’ holiday, anyone?!), you can travel in style together on a pre-booked minibus – International Coaches can sort you out on that one, getting you there in plenty of time before you fly. Pack plenty of things to do on the plane, especially if you’re someone with an Internet addiction, because you won’t be able to connect from 38,000 feet! You should also print a little checklist for the morning you leave – you don’t want to have to turn back for things you’ve carelessly forgotten when time is of the essence. Finally, if you’re a little afraid of flying and want to make sure you’re seated next to your pals, see if you can check in online before you arrive at the airport, as you’re less likely to be split up!
As for the trip itself, that’s really all on you! Hopefully before you booked, you scoped the place out, but if not, all is not lost. Trip Advisor is the most awesome thing ever for explorers, because everything from your restaurants, to your beaches and bars will be rated and photographed by real people. Which sometimes, is exactly what you need. Some exotic locations tend to have more money for a great marketing team than on actually improving their establishment or resort, so make sure you know what you’re getting yourself in for before you go.
Most importantly, you need to go, let go of British life, shut off your phone, your emails and your problems and just appreciate the break! Have fun!
