Now you all know that I’m a green smoothie girl, but every once in a while I like to change things up and experiment. I just love this smoothie, it’s so creamy that has the texture of a milkshake and if you love cherries then I know that you will love it too. A few weeks ago I decided to make a cherry and vanilla smoothie bowl for breakfast and promised that I would share the recipe on the blog – well here it is!
This version of the smoothie is a little different because it’s not served in a bowl and it has one crucial ingredient that wasn’t in the original recipe…chilli. Ever since trying the bar of dark chocolate with chilli I’ve been obsessed and love having that bit of kick to my sweet food. It just adds an edge to the flavour, and in this case, the cherries, it’s definitely not blow your head off hot at all, but a subtle background heat that really works well.
- 1 cup frozen cherries
- 1 banana
- 1/3 cup cashew nuts
- 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
- 1 large red chilli deseeded
- 1 1/2 cups unsweetened almond milk
- Pour all of the ingredients into a blender and blitz until smooth.
- Serve in your favourite glass or cup and devour.
With it being National Curry Week running from 5th October to 11th October, the chilli kick in this smoothie is the perfect healthy start to you need celebrate. I never even knew that a special week dedicated to curries even existed, so I’m really happy that there is an excuse to eat one of my favourite foods every day this week. Chillies and spicy food, in particular, are renowned for their energy enhancing properties and they’re also great at giving your metabolism a boost.
If you’re not a chilli fan like me, then you can leave it out, but as I mentioned before this smoothie isn’t going to make you break out in a sweat or gasping frantically for a glass of water. Growing up we ate a lot of hot food at home and that has definitely encouraged my love of spicy food as an adult. Knowing that I can get my chilli fix early in the morning without having to resort to eating a curry means that I will be whipping this smoothie up more often to help kick-start and energise my day.
Do you like hot and spicy food? Have you ever tried adding chilli to sweet food before?
Will you be making a curry to celebrate National Curry Week?
