Chocolate (and peanut butter!) is one of those foods that I can happily eat square by square, before realising that I’ve nearly polished off nearly the entire bar. To save me from myself, rather than take the entire bar with me from the fridge I take just enough to tide me over, one of my tips from my combating your sugar cravings post.
Mindlessly eating a whole bar of chocolate is so easily done and I kid you not I would quite happily dive head first into a vat of melted dark chocolate. Yes, I know I’m addicted!
A piece of chocolate is a lovely after dinner treat, perfect movie snack or an indulgent afternoon treat. One afternoon when I fancied some chocolate but was all out (shocking I know!) I did have the ingredients to make a seriously indulgent chocolate based snack that is also pretty healthy too.
- 6 pitted medjool dates
- 7 tbsp rolled oats
- 1 tbsp smooth peanut butter
- 1 tbsp raw cacao powder
- 1 tbsp cacao nibs
- Pour all of the ingredients into a food processor and blend until a breadcrumb mixture forms.
- Take tablespoon portions of the mixture and roll into balls and place on some greaseproof paper.
- Allow the energy bites to set in the fridge for at least 20 minutes
- Once they have firmed up, eat and devour!
Chocolate and peanut butter is the perfect flavour combination and pays homage to that famous chocolate bar that I never really liked so much because they were far too sweet for my taste buds. The raw cacao powder gives a wonder dark bitterness that is balanced will with the super sweet medjool dates. I like to leave mine out of the fridge for a few minutes before I eat them so that the inside softens and they have a delicious truffle-like texture.
If you’re not a cacao fan, you could you use cocoa powder as an alternative. I wanted to make these as indulgent and healthy as possible and you really do get a good hit of chocolate but also all of those nourishing healthy fats from the peanut butter and fibre from the oats, which makes these a great sustainable snack.
