A warm and comforting hot chocolate recipe for those dark Autumn and winter nights. Spiked with medicinal turmeric and warming cinnamon a mug of this golden milk hot chocolate will make you feel all snug and cosy on the inside. Chocolate lovers this one is for you, and I hope you’re going to love it as much as I do.
Recently I’ve been reading The Little Book of Hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) and learning all about the Danish art of living well. Hygge is the appreciation of all things cosy and taking pleasure from a soothing atmosphere and objects. The book had my name written all over it, a mad passion for all things Autumn and snuggling up on the sofa by candlelight on a cold evening. Oh, Autumn how I love thee!
- 250ml/1 cup almond milk
- 1 tbsp raw cacao
- 1 tsp turmeric
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp of maple syrup
- Heat the milk in a saucepan approximately 2 minutes, until simmering.
- Stir in the turmeric, cinnamon and maple syrup until combined.
- Pour into your favourite mug and enjoy.
- The recipe can easily be doubled up to make more than one portion and can also be made in the microwave.
Curling up with a mug of hot chocolate is one of my favourite things to do in autumn. So rock and roll, I know! It’s a lovely treat while reading a good book or watching a film, but thought that I might as well try to make it a healthy indulgence and get a nutritional boost when I’m in couch potato mode.
Using a heaping spoon of raw cacao powder instead of cocoa powder means that there are plenty of antioxidant goodness to help your body fight off those nasty free radicals. Of course, turmeric is a powerhouse of nutrition and I really like the comforting effect it gives with the cinnamon. Golden milk is all the rage at the moment and I really love adding turmeric to my smoothies for a healthy boost as well.
